Back home I called my pastor, Father Andrew, and told him Shelby’s situation. “I’ll ask the bishop for a suggestion,” he said. “I’ve never actually seen a weeping icon in person, but I’m sure he will know of one, and can tell us which one is closest. How far can Shelby travel?”

“I didn’t ask. I think she’s in remission now, since her mother didn’t mention travel being a problem.”

The next day Father Andrew called me back to tell me about a miracle-working icon that was currently weeping.

“Unfortunately, it’s in Pennsylvania. I hope she can travel that far.”

“Tell me more,” I said.

“They are calling it ‘the Tender Heart.’ It’s a myrrh-flowing icon of the Virgin Mary, and several people have been healed by its tears, including a woman with stage four cancer. Her doctor at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center told her that there was nothing he could do for her except control her pain. A friend anointed her with the myrrh and she was miraculously healed. Her doctor confirmed that there is no trace of the cancer, and that her healing can only be the result of a miracle.”

“Oh my. Is the icon in an Orthodox church?”

“Yes, it’s at Saint George in Taylor, Pennsylvania. I spoke with the priest there, and they welcome visitors. In fact, they pray a special service to the Mother of God every Wednesday night in front of the icon. People have also been healed from prostate cancer, liver cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, brain lymphoma, and other illnesses.”

“Wonderful! Maybe I can go with Nora and her family. I’d love to see this icon myself. I’ll let her know the news. Thanks so much for your help.”

I called Nora right away and told her about the icon in Pennsylvania.

“Would it be all right if I went with your family? I’d love to venerate this icon myself.”

“Oh—yes! I’d love for you to come with us. We’ll book our flights right away and I’ll send you an email showing you which flight. Maybe you can travel with us, too.”
